In place of the images of yesteryear—older adults walking into the sunset or sitting on a park bench—we often now see photos of seniors playing golf, riding motorcycles, surfing and skydiving. But where does this leave older adults who are dealing with health challenges? “Skydiving, surfing … I can’t even manage stairs anymore,” a senior might say. “I guess I’m not a good example of healthy aging.”

According to The European Society of Cardiology (ESC), a condition called “broken heart syndrome” most commonly occurs when a person experiences severe emotional distress after a sad or stressful event, such as the loss of a loved one.
